Rules

Form real words from the rings. Each word must contain at least one letter from each of the three rings, with a three-letter minimum. Inner letters score 3×, middle 2×, outer 1×. You have 20 attempts; wrong words still cost you one. First three dictionary misses on otherwise-valid plays are free missed throws.

How to play, with a worked example

Goal

Score as many points as possible in 20 submissions. You score by submitting valid English words built from the 15 letters on the board, with the constraint that each word must touch all three rings.

Word rules

  1. Every letter in your word must come from the rings (any ring counts). Letters can be reused as many times as you like.
  2. Your word must contain at least one letter from the inner ring, at least one from the middle ring, and at least one from the outer ring.
  3. Minimum length is 3 letters.
  4. Each word can only be submitted once per round.

Scoring

  • Each outer-ring letter you use scores 1 point.
  • Each middle-ring letter scores 2 points.
  • Each inner-ring letter scores 3 points.
  • Length bonus: 5-letter words +2, 6+ letter words +5.
  • If a letter appears more than once in your word, it's scored once per occurrence.

Attempt economy

You only have 20 submissions. Both valid and invalid words consume an attempt. The pip row tracks how many you've burned through.

Missed throws: the first three times a word satisfies the ring rules but isn't recognised by our dictionary, the attempt is refunded as a "missed throw". After three missed throws, dictionary misses cost an attempt like any other invalid word. Missed throws only apply when the word would have been a legal play if the dictionary contained it — words that miss a ring, are too short, or use letters not on the rings always cost an attempt.

Whenever you submit a ring-legal word we don't recognise — free or not — we'll show it to you and ask whether you'd like to send it in for dictionary review. Say yes when you're confident it's a real word; otherwise just dismiss the prompt and play on.

How to use the interface

  • Tap any letter on the rings to append it to your current word. Letters can be reused as many times as you like, and each letter shows its score multiplier (1×, 2× or 3×) as a small badge.
  • Letters are colour-coded by ring: outer in blue (1×), middle in yellow (2×), inner in coral (3×).
  • Tap Enter to submit and score the word. Tap Reset to clear it, or Del to remove just the last letter. None of these cost an attempt; only Enter does.
  • The score, attempts and pip row update after every submission.

Worked example

Suppose the rings are:

Outer (1x): A R T N S L O Middle (2x): E B M K I Inner (3x): P C Y

Sample submissions:

PARTY P=3, A=1, R=1, T=1, Y=3 -> 9 TRACE T=1, R=1, A=1, C=3, E=2 -> 8 CAMP C=3, A=1, M=2, P=3 -> 9 RECAP R=1, E=2, C=3, A=1, P=3 +2 -> 12 (5-letter bonus) CRYPTIC C=3, R=1, Y=3, P=3, T=1, I=2, C=3 +5 -> 21 (6-letter bonus)

That's 5 attempts spent and 59 points scored. Notice CRYPTIC's score: it loads up on inner-ring letters AND gets a length bonus, which is the play.

Tips

  • Don't burn attempts on words that obviously miss a ring. RAT uses only outer-ring letters; it'd be invalid even though it's a word.
  • Inner letters are usually the rarest in English (often consonants like J, K, V, X, Y, Z). Build around them, not despite them.
  • Long shots: try suffixes like -ING, -TION, -ATE, prefixes like UN-, RE-, IN- when the relevant letters are present.
