Share data with your healthcare team
GutDiary uses the clinically validated Bristol Stool Form Scale to help you track bowel health accurately. All data is stored locally on your device using localStorage โ nothing is ever transmitted externally. Export your CSV and share it directly with your gastroenterologist, GP or dietitian.
โ๏ธ This app is a tracking tool only and does not provide medical advice. Always consult your healthcare provider about symptoms.
Everything you need to know about logging your gut health and sharing data with your doctor.
Tap the green โ button at the bottom centre of the screen to open the logging form.
Choose your Bristol Stool Type (1โ7). This is the only required field โ everything else is optional but helpful.
Fill in as many details as you like โ colour, urgency, pain, symptoms, and notes. The more you log, the more useful your data is for your doctor.
Tap Save Entry. Your entry is stored privately on your phone โ nothing is sent anywhere.
Before a doctor's appointment, go to Export & Settings (โ๏ธ) and tap Export as CSV to download a file you can share.
The Bristol Stool Form Scale is a medical diagnostic tool developed at the University of Bristol in 1997. It classifies stool into 7 types and is widely used by gastroenterologists and GPs to assess bowel health.
Types 1โ2 suggest constipation. Types 3โ4 are considered healthy. Types 5โ7 suggest increasing diarrhoea. Persistent extremes should always be discussed with your doctor.
๐จ Urgency (1โ10)
How urgently did you need to go? 1 = no rush at all, 10 = you couldn't wait another second. High urgency is a common and significant symptom in IBD and IBS.
โก Pain / Discomfort (0โ10)
Rate any pain during or after the movement. 0 = completely painless, 10 = severe pain. This helps your doctor see patterns of pain over time.
๐ Ease of Passing
How easy was it? This combines Bristol type with effort required. Straining even for soft stools can be a useful symptom for your doctor to know about.
๐ฉธ Symptoms
Tap any that apply. Blood or Mucus are particularly important to log โ your doctor will want to know the frequency of these. Incomplete Emptying (tenesmus) is a common IBD symptom.
๐ท Photos
Completely optional. Photos are stored only on your device and are never uploaded. They can help your doctor assess consistency or colour more accurately. Photos are not included in CSV exports.
Home โ Your dashboard. Shows today's count, weekly total, average Bristol type, and your recent entries. Tap any entry to see its full details.
History โ Browse all your entries. Use the filter bar at the top to show only specific Bristol types. Tap the ๐ icon to delete an individual entry.
Log โ The main logging form. Bristol type is required; everything else is optional. The date/time defaults to now but you can change it to backfill an entry.
Stats โ Charts and trends including daily frequency, Bristol type distribution, pain & urgency over time, and colour breakdown. Quick insights highlight anything notable.
Export & Settings โ Download a CSV for your doctor, back up all data as JSON, restore from a backup, or clear all data. Also has "Add to Home Screen" instructions.
All data is stored only on your device using your browser's built-in storage (localStorage). Nothing is sent to any server, cloud, or third party โ ever.
Use Backup Data (JSON) regularly to save a copy of all your entries. If you clear your browser data, switch devices, or reinstall, you can restore from this backup.
The CSV export contains all your text entries in a format your doctor can open in Excel or any spreadsheet tool. Photos are stored separately and are not included in the CSV.
If you use Private / Incognito browsing, data will be lost when you close the browser window. Always use normal browsing mode for GutDiary.
GutDiary is a Progressive Web App (PWA). You can install it on your phone's home screen for instant access โ no app store needed, and it works offline.
